Philosophy Workfare Societys Restraint To Social Reform Of The Many

Reasoning : Workfare Society's Restraint to Social Reform Of the many visited words in the social change jargon of Canadians today, the term workfare appears to invigorate a lot of discussion and feeling. Alongside the thoughts of independence, employability improvement, and work disincentives, it is the idea of workfare that causes the most pressure between it's legislature and business supporters and it's enemy of destitution and social equity pundits. In fact, workfare is a withdrawal of the idea of working for government assistance which essentially alludes to the prerequisite that beneficiaries perform unpaid work as a state of getting social help. Ongoing discussions regarding the matter of government assistance are a long way from interesting. They are for the most part basically contemporary endeavors to choose if we live in a fair society or not. This discussion has been a significant worry since the beginning. Likewise, the arrangement of budgetary help to the capable worki ng-age poor has consistently been dubious. On one side are the individuals who articulate the sentiments and perspectives on poor people, to be specific, the Permissive Position, who consider them to be casualties of our general public and meriting network support. The issues of the poor range from individual (relinquishment or demise of the family pay worker) to the social (racial bias in the activity advertise) and monetary (breakdown in the market interest for their regularly restricted aptitudes because of a financial downturn or move in innovation). The Permissive View uncovers that all members in the public eye are meriting the unlimited legitimate right to government disability with no connection to the person's conduct. It is accepted that any general public which can stand to gracefully the fundamental needs of life to each person of that society yet doesn't, can be blamed for forcing long lasting hardship or demise to those destitute people. The explanation behind the dest itute individual being in that circumstance, regardless of whether they are eager to work, or their activities while accepting help have basically no weight in their capacity to get this government assistance support. This view is by and by not retained in the public eye, for on the off chance that it was, the generalization of the 'Run of the mill Welfare Recipient' would be incredible. On the opposite side, the Individualists accept that liberal guide to the poor is a harmed goblet that urges the poor to seek after an existence of neediness contradicting their own drawn out interests also of those of society all in all. Here, high qualities are set on close to home decision. Every member in the public eye is a dependable person who can settle on his own choices so as to control the movement of his own life. Related to this feeling, in the event that you are given the opportunity to settle on these choices, at that point without a doubt you should acknowledge the outcomes of those choices. An individual should likewise work some portion of his time for other people (by methods for government burdening on earned pay). Those in the public arena who bolster potential government assistance beneficiaries don't give out of good cause, however contrastingly are compelled to do it when told by the Government. Every individual in the public eye contains responsibility for own body and work. In this way anything earned by this body and work in our Free Market System is merited completely by that person. Any methods for deducting from these profit to help others is proportional to crime. Potential government assistance beneficiaries should just be upheld by intentional subsidizing. For this side, government assistance at last imperils society by debilitating two of it's ethical establishments: that physically fit grown-ups ought to be occupied with a blend of working, learning and kid raising; and furthermore, that the two guardians should accept every single relevant c ommitment of bringing up their children.(5) In mix of the two past perspectives, the Puritan View essentially includes the possibility that inside a general public which can adequately bolster every last bit of it's people, all members in the general public ought to have the lawful right to Government provided government assistance benefits. Be that as it may, the person's drive to work is held emphatically to one side. Potential government assistance beneficiaries are named a duty of the Government. The assets required to help the destitute are taken by methods for tax assessment from the profit of the working open. This creates a commitment to work. Consequently, if an individual doesn't make the penance of his time and vitality to contribute their income

And the best way to set up this is to identify what the facts are and what is presented by the evidence. What are the facts, and how do they affect the topic? In other words, it should be evident on what grounds a student would argue against the theory and the evidence presented.Another example would be the description of a techn ique, and this is probably what most teachers will ask. The important thing here is that we consider all of the topics under consideration to move from argument to discovery. In other words, we need to include every possible situation. If there is some problem, the student should try to solve the problem. The more data, theories, the more the student should realize the importance of solving problems. What is more interesting about science and technology? Why is this topic so exciting? The answer lies in the fact that science and technology go well beyond just the discovery of methods to make products and services. It is also about the discovery of the many facets of life and the universe. There are many other worthy topic ideas for essay topics for elementary students. Using these examples, one could get a better idea of what to include in the argument. These will allow students to come up with an essay topic that will satisfy the teachers. An argumentative essay topic for elementary s tudents should focus on the ways that science and technology change our lives, and how they can change the world. A teacher would find this interesting to read. Reading these essays and selecting the best one would benefit both the student and the teacher.

Communism Vs. Capitalism Rough Draft - 793 Words

Jack Clendenen English 1A Professor Roffel October 10th, 2014 Communism vs. Capitalism Comparison Rough Draft Throughout the history of the United States, capitalism has always been a staple in American society. Would the country we live in today be an enhanced, more equal place to live if it were a communist one? Communism, by definition, is more or less an economic system of society in which the major resources and means of production are owned by the community and are not monopolized. Whereas in capitalism, private businesses and firms are generally in command concerning the trading of goods within what is considered a multifaceted system of prices and markets. Though Capitalism is not perfect, it is the best option the United States has to date according to many analysts. During the times of the industrial revolution, the idea of communism was very popular, and for good measure. While the factory owners are sitting back and collecting their riches, men, women and children are working 18 hour days in unfathomable working conditions. This une ven distribution of wealth evoked government intervention and prevented monopolies from further dominating the economic world. During the 20th century, a plethora of countries had declared themselves as communist, though only five remain today. There have been countries that have tried this form of government. The results of these countries’ experiences with communism were largely unsuccessful. Carol Ann Duffy - 2780 Words

Analysis by theme – Carol Ann Duffy CHILDHOOD Notes from â€Å"Originally† Repeatedly returns to the metaphor of childhood as a â€Å"country† – echoes of L.P. Hartley’s â€Å"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there. Notion of past being intimately associated with place, and that adulthood is a journey away from it. â€Å"All childhood is an emigration.†/ â€Å"I want our own country†. Fear of being in an alien place as a child reflected in the alienation of adult life. â€Å"I lost a river, culture, speech, sense of first space and the right place† – Duffy reflects on moving house as a child, and the way she lost her first senses of the world as the became accustomed to somewhere new. â€Å"I stared at the eyes of a blind toy,†¦show more content†¦The mistakes have not made him circumspect or reflective, he has just become increasingly frenzied. The headlines that round off this stanza are demonstrations of the use of sex to sell papers. They refer to a â€Å"PANTIE ROMP† and a â€Å"RENT BOY†. Later, we are told of other stories featuring â€Å"DIPLOMAT IN BED†, â€Å"BONKING† and a politician who is â€Å"A NIGHTCLUB TART†. The arrogance of the narrator seems unbearable when he claims that his work makes him â€Å"a sort of poet/ for our times†. This betrays a lack of understanding of what poetry is. He laments that it is becoming harder to shock his audience and must become increasingly lurid. He wishes to have â€Å"been around when the Titanic sank† purely to write the headlines. He is bereft of compassion and entirely self-serving. The narrator continues his idea of being a â€Å"poet† by confessing he wishes that â€Å"kids will know my headlines off by heart†, as though they were poems taught in schools. Finally, he reflects on â€Å"the poems of the decade†: â€Å"Stuff ‘em!† and â€Å"Gotcha!† In the 1980s these were defining headlines for key cultural moments, but as per the hack’s demand, they have been reduced entirely. Ironically, these have indeed become so well known that few people, certainly of that generation, do not know what they are about. To some extent, by writing the poem, Duffy is complicit in perpetuating them in the popular memory. Vern M. Rotruck Lyndsey Daniel Comp I MWF 12:00 19 November 2014 Why High School Football Shouldn’t Be Banned. Football, ever since it began, has had the constant question of should it be banned. Footballs origins began back in ancient Greece where even then it was known as a very rough and brutal game. When football came to England it was thought to be so rough that kings Henry II and Henry IV both actually banned it. A lot has changed since those times in history. Comparative Paper on The Aenid and The Epic of Gilgamesh free essay sample

An epic is a long, exalted narrative poem, usually on a serious subject, centered on a heroic figure. The earliest epics, known as primary, or original, epics, were shaped from the legends of an age when a nation was conquering and expanding; such is the foundation of Gilgamesh, of Homer’s the Iliad and the Odyssey, and of the Beowulf. Literary, or secondary, epics, written in conscious imitation of earlier forms, are most notably represented by Vergils Aeneid and Miltons Paradise Lost. (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2008) The Aenid is, if not the greatest, one of the greatest Latin poems ever written. Vergil wrote this in the time of political reforms in Rome. He was determined to make a glorified foundation of the start of the Roman Empire and thus, Aenid was born. The Epic of Gilgamesh is among the earliest works of literature to have been found. It is a Babylonian epic based on an actual historical figure, a king who reigned over the Sumerian city-state of Uruk around 2700 BC although the journeys that were undertaken by the protagonist had no real basis. We will write a custom essay sample on Comparative Paper on The Aenid and The Epic of Gilgamesh or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In terms of form, both epics are divided into twelve (12) sections, with Aenid separated by books and Gilgamesh by tablets. Similarly, the epics are also divided into two major parts. Books 1-6 of Aenid talk about Aeneas’ journey to Italy, and books 7-12 subsequently talk about the war that happened in Italy. The first seven tablets of Gilgamesh illustrate the relationship of Gilgamesh with Enkidu and the tasks they finish together, and the last tablets describe Gilgamesh and his quest for immortality due to his fear of death. Aenid is written in dactylic hexameter (also known as â€Å"heroic hexameter†, usually pertaining to epic poetry) while Gilgamesh has no noticeable meter. Aenid uses a rhyming scheme, while, again, Gilgamesh doesn’t. Also, Gilgamesh makes use of a lot of repetition of a group of lines per tablet. Story-wise, Aenid starts with the journey of Aenid and the Trojans towards Italy. Aeneas is just an ordinary hero, but it is revealed to him that he is destined to establish a great empire once he reaches the place. In Gilgamesh, however, Gilgamesh is already the king of Uruk. His purpose of setting out with Enkidu is to gain fame and recognition. In both stories, women play roles as guides. In Aenid, Sybil of Cumae is a woman who could tell the future. She guides Aeneas and goes with him to the Underworld. Her counterpart in the epic of Gilgamesh is Siduri. She doesn’t accompany Gilgamesh like Sybil does with Aenid. Instead, Siduri only gives him instructions on how to get to Utnapishtim. Two other notable women in the epics are Juno for Aenid, and Ishtar for Gilgamesh. These two embody the quote â€Å"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. † Juno hates the Trojans because Paris chose Venus over her. Her anger leads her to become the main antagonist in Aenid. She continually causes much trouble for the Trojans because she doesn’t want them to reach Italy. Ishtar, on the other hand, is angry because Gilgamesh spurns her advances. In her fury, she sends the Bull of Heaven to attack Gilgamesh and Enkidu, but her plan fails. But in the later parts of the epic, this gesture would serve as a catalyst for the many disasters that would happen in the life of Gilgamesh. In relation to Juno and Ishtar, it should be noted that the roles of gods and goddesses are very important in these epics. They are either helpers or hindrances in the hero’s quest. It is noticeable though, that the gods and goddess are more involved in Aenid as compared to the gods and goddesses of Gilgamesh. Another parallelism in both stories is the presence of symbolic rivers and ferrymen. In Aenid, Charon, is in charge of ferrying the dead across the River Styx in order for their souls to rest in peace. In Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh has to cross the Waters of Death whose waters are deadly to the touch. He gets help from Urshanabi to get across. Urshanabi is in the company of stone-giants, unlike Charon who does his work alone. Aenid and Gilgamesh both touch on the topic of life, death and fate. The journeys of the heroes are journeys towards life. In the case of Aeneas, the establishment of Rome meant a new life for his people and a chance to start over. Gilgamesh also seeks life; specifically, immortality. However, the goal of Gilgamesh is more inclined for self-preservation. The mortality aspects of both epics are more vibrant during the later parts of the epics. In Aeneid, when Aeneas journeys to Hades to visit his father, he also talks to a large number of the warriors that have died in the Trojan War. The death of these warriors shows the mortality of human beings. In Gilgamesh, the death of Enkidu despairs Gilgamesh at first. But soon, he comes to realize how easily his life, too, can be taken away; making him seek eternal life. Lastly, fate, as we know, is something vital in Greek and Roman mythology. It is a fixed order of events and a fixed outcome. Although the former can, at times, be adjusted by gods and men, the latter is something they cannot change. Of the two epics, Aenid better exemplifies this. Juno continually tries to stop or to distract Aeneaas from reaching Rome, but Jupiter reveals that whatever is destined to happen, will happen. Aenid, on his part, follows without question because he trusts what fate has destined for him. Now, unlike Aeneas, Gilgamesh tries to cheat death by going to Utnapishtim and asking him the secret to immortal life. But Utnapishtim says that eternal life was granted to him and his wife only, and that it was something that will never be repeated by the gods. The most interesting in terms of the contrast between both epics is probably the development of their protagonists. As mentioned before, Aeneas is described as a mere hero during the first part of Aenid. He’s a demigod but there doesn’t seem to be something special about him aside from the fact that his mother, Venus always comes to his aid. However, as the story progresses, Aenid now becomes this sort of superhuman being capable of taking down the most skilled of warriors. In contrast, Gilgamesh, in the first tablet, is described as superior in strength and wisdom, and perfect in the physical sense. Towards the end though, after Enkidu’s death, Gilgamesh is dissolved into a being that is very much fearful of his own death. He becomes desperate, pitiful and pathetic. We see the evolution of character in Aenid while we see the devolution in Gilgamesh. The two epics have many similar points, but it’s their differences in characterization and plot that make me feel that Aenid has more substance. In writing style, I also like Aenid more. I think that the epic of Gilgamesh uses to much repetition that it already becomes annoying, and tempting me to skip some parts. Overall, of the two epics, I have more appreciation for Aenid simply because it’s more fun to read. Sources: Epic. Encyclopedia. com. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2008. 12 Mar. 2011 .

In What Ways Did the French and India free essay sample

This can be proven with the provided documents. The British defeated the French in 1763, and acquired their land up to the Mississippi river. This gain of land required the British to send more troops to maintain control In the colonies. This Increase of British Involvement also meant that Britain was In debt and believed that because they protected the colonists, they should help repay Brutal, After the colonist established their own representative governments during the period of salutary select, they did not need this much British involvement. This led the colonist to believe they had no political rights or involvement of their own affairs. However on the other hand, a George Washington addresses General Edward Bradford, hoping to enroll a military career under his command. Also Reverend Thomas Bernard showed his delight of the victory over the French and stated that the colonies were now Safe from the Enemy of the Wilderness. We will write a custom essay sample on In What Ways Did the French and India or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page . . During one of his sermons. This shows that not all colonists believed that British involvement had a negative impact, becauseWashington wanted to enlist as a British soldier in the colonies and Bernard thought the children of New England should be grateful of our Indulgent Mother, who has most generously rescued and protected us Soon after the war the British began to strictly regulate trade and began to enact taxes such as the Stamp Act. This angered many of the colonists and they began to protest against taxation without representation. Benjamin Franklin sent a letter to John Hugs in 1 765 stating As to the Stamp Act, thou we propose doing our Endeavourer to get it repealed in which I am sure you would concurEven in a newspaper masthead there was a reference to the Stamp Act by putting a skull and crossbones where a stamp should have been located. The strict trade regulation also was not favorable by the colonists. In a British Order in Council, a man had said due to the population and territory increase, it has cost more to maintain the colonies and that proper regulation of their trade is of immediate necessity. The trade regulation began and the British took control over all trade and placed tariffs on many of their Items. The dislike of the taxation spread wide through the colonies and they rebelled against It.Britain was forced to remove the Stamp Act, but In turn had enacted a different tax. The colonists had become more frustrated with the British and realized that they were losing their rights as times are dreadful, doleful, dismal, dolorous, and dollar-less. The newspaper also stated Adieu adieu to liberty. This emphasizes that the colonists are going through a bad time because of the taxes and they were losing their liberty, or freedom, that they should have as Englishmen. Tension between British and the Colonists was rising. In a Massachusetts soldiers diary he had written And we, being here within tone walls, are not likely to get liquors or clothes at this time of the year; and though we be Englishmen born, we are debarred Englishmen liberty. This diary showed that not only him, but all of the men were denied rights of Englishmen. The French and Indian war altered the political, economic, and ideological relationship between the British and its American colonies as stated above. Even though most evidence points toward a negative alteration of the relationship between Britain and its colonies, some evidence does provide a more positive relationship.

Life of a Rich Man essays

Life of a Rich Man essays Christmas is my favorite time of the year. This is when I walk around practicaly eating my way through the day. There is food everywhere and people are so cheery and daydreamers that they do not stop and look at the pretty, washed dogs to feed, over the older one who has not had a bath in too many dog years to count. I do not so much worry about being warm. As long as I have food, I forget about being cold. But then again, who am I to complain? Dogs are always warm. We were made to love outside. Humans do not have this kind of specia treatment. But then again, humans can complain! I remember when I was just a little pup and this little red-head girl with the biggest rosy cheecks took me in. Her bright blue eyes lit up so much when she brought me in front of her parents. Her mother almost had a heart atack; she started screaming and shrieking. The father was more understanding. He nicely told her to get the little ugly pup out of his face. Well, for the 20 minutes she hid me under the bed, and the two it took her parents to get me out, I never heard so many complaints. The people had absolutely everything in front of them at the snap of a finger and nothing was good enough. Maybe all these observations in life taught me that Nicolae is the best man a dog can ask for a master. He literally walks through life and it's like he takes everything within his body at the touch of a finger. This man simply stares at everything and finds not one thing wrong with this inperfect world. That is why I picked him. He is such a happy man. At only 48 years old, you imagine one would have a family or at least if he did not, he would talk about what a waste this life has been and how everything is so wrong left and right. Happiness has not always been his first priority like that, though. It was such a sad day. The clouds were beautiful and the sun was so bright, I could barely keep my eyes o...

Sustainable Coffee Market Essay Example for Free

Sustainable Coffee Market Essay 1.1 Company overview Our company CoffeeTime will be established in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This is due to the fact that the highest proportion of coffee consumption within Europe is in the Scandinavian countries, followed by the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg; it would therefore be efficient to establish the company in Rotterdam. This allows for a relatively central base with strong ties to other European countries to import/export and transport the coffee. As a company we would like to do business as sustainably and fairly as possible. Due to fair trade, we would like to help our suppliers by giving them the opportunity to produce at reasonable costs and also help ourselves by selling the coffee at reasonable prices. Fair trade also includes an educating sytem for our employees and people related to the company, such as coffeefarmers and even consumers. This system is used to prove that honest and good quality products do not need to be expensive. With this in mind there it can create a positive effect in our products which will be of benefit to everyone. The coffee will be produced and exported from Brazil to the Netherlands. Brazil was chosen due to the fact it is one of the best places in the world where coffeebeans are produced in relatively environmentally friendly circumstances. Indonesia, India, Kenia, Liberia and Mexico were further alternatives for CoffeeTime. However Brazil was chosen as it is single-handedly responsible for about a third of all the coffee in the world, as it is worlds largest coffee producer. Furthermore, there is already a Fairtrade policy applied in that area of South America by many companies, which is still ongoing and can be of benefit for the objectives of our own company. Another reason why it is attractive to do business in Brazil, is because of the logistics. Brazil has the largest port of all South America, named Port of Santos. From there on the coffee can be shipped easily to the biggest port in Europe, situated in Rotterdam where CoffeeTime have decided to establish the company. This can be seen as an advantage for both countries due to having innovation hubs. CoffeeTime wants to produce and sell the most popular coffee known on the target market; The Arabica and Robusta. However, each one of those beans can be used to provide different flavours of coffee, depending on the several techniques that are used for making coffee. 1.2 Mission and vision 1.2.1 Mission Throughout all of our business activities we want to ensure honest dealing with customers and suppliers while offering impartial advice to become the best sustainable Coffee chain. We want to use our market position of CoffeeTime to benefit our customers by offering a world class coffee experience at an affordable price. 1.2.2 Vision Treating eachother fairly can help maintaining a good relationship. CoffeeTime believes in creating an alternative way of helping the world right now and always in the future, by doing fair business from farmer to consumer. 1.3 Corporate Objectives The objectives which we stand for are related to our mission and vision as well as to benefit all stakeholders, by providing a sustainable coffee market, now and in the future; †¢ Become a leading coffee brand in order to change the market and influence Non- Fair trade coffee multinationals to go produce fairly. †¢ Focussing on improving the environmental, social and economic conditions, as well as protecting and improving the natural environment and insuring the labour rights and health of local communities. †¢ Branding CoffeeTime as a sustainable organic, Fair trade coffee brand on the market. 1.4 Keys to Success CoffeeTime has to realise that succes can only be achieved by being the best in what you do. After all, coffee is a resource intensive industry. It takes an incredible amount of energy to produce, transport, roast, deliver and brew coffee. Committed to preventing an ecological footprint, CoffeeTime will continuously strive to find new ways to restrict the impact on the environment, from production to consumption. Therefore it is of upmost importance for CoffeeTime to invest in the following: †¢ Provide an education for the farmers to help them at produce the coffee in a more optimised way. †¢ To have and keep a fair price for the coffee for everyone. †¢ To keep providing the best quality coffee. †¢ Make sure that every aspect of the product is produced in an eco-friendly way. For example, the packaging should be recycled so it can be reused wherever possible. †¢ To have good transportation by sea with providing the least harm to the enivronment due to fuel of the ship etc. †¢ Chapter 2 Product and services 2.1 Product and service description CoffeeTime will import from Brazil the finest selection of Arabica beans. In simple terms this means; Arabica is cultivated in the shade and Robusta is not. The culture of the Robusta beans are a dispensation in the culture of the traditional coffee in which coffee is cultivated under the cover of the native rain forest trees. In the 70s, a system of new farm was promoted but the result was that we’ve seen shaved forests and coffee trees planted in dense rows. These short-term farms of monoculture produced more coffee, but it had a number consequences for the environment, with soil depletion, accelerated erosion and pollution of streams. From here out CoffeeTime will produce a number of different flavours, such as extra strong, strong, regular, decaf etc. Producers are forced not to overuse pesticides or insecticides. In fact, 70% of Fair Trade products come from organic agriculture. This approach to sustainable development is supported by the explicit prohibition of the use of GMOs in products. Part of the price paid by the final customer represents a premium (between 5 and 10% of the price paid by the consumer). The latter is used collectively for social projects of various natures that benefit not only small farmers but also their families and the environment. The cooperative may decide to invest in a training program on organic farming, build a school or hospital, to restore a drive or set up a transport service. 2.2 Competitive Comparison The four major roasters Kraft, Nestlà ©, Procter Gamble and Sara Lee have little reflected this decline but profit margins remain high: Nestlà © makes a margin estimated at 26% of the instant coffee. The benefits of Sara Lee’s coffee are estimated at almost 17%, which represents a very high figure compared to other brands of food and drinks. 2.3 Sales Literature If people are sensitive to the approach and initiative, they will adhere to it quite naturally. The Sales aim is to target the niche market and to propose to our clients a wider offer which also corresponds to both modes of consumption in different social classes. Additionally, by selling our products we will not only provide a flavoursome product, but also inform customers about the product itself and how it is made. In Brazil, the production of coffee will not harm the environment ,(organic, wild harvest, farming) and it is important for our customers to know this . This method will therefore allow the customers of CoffeeTime to be involved in the process and feel valued as a consequence. The import of coffee from Brazil will be done in the most direct way possible to avoid costly middlemen, allowing to better pay artisans and producers. 2.4 Sourcing and fulfilment Part of the price paid by the final customer represents a premium (between 5 and 10% of the price paid by the consumer). The latter is used collectively for social projects of various natures that benefit not only small farmers but also their families and the environment. The cooperative may decide to invest in a training program on organic farming, build a school or hospital, to restore a drive or set up a transport service. 2.5 Technology The technology used by the company will include the use of partially automated selecting machines which will allow for increased production capacity with a lower machine-to-operator. Additional storage capabilities will decrease shipping charges and will reduce the need for permanent shipping employees. High-technology information system upgrades will improve all aspects of business, especially inventory control, tracking of shipments, and communication with clients in import and export countries. 2.6 Future Products and Services In the future CoffeeTime will develop and produce a number of different types and flavours of coffee. In addition to Arabica and Robusta, we will also import from Liberia the Liberica coffee. The Coffee Liberica tree grows up to 9 metres in height, producing larger cherries than those found on Coffea Arabica trees. This coffee was brought to Indonesia to replace the Arabica trees killed by the coffee rust disease at the end of the 19th century. It can still be found in parts of Central and East Java today. The Liberica coffee will also be produced in different strengths and varieties of coffee. Chapter 3 Market Analysis Summary 3.1 Market research According to the Daily Dutch News, the Netherlands is one of the countries with the highest coffee consumption in the world. The Dutch are also world leader in sustainable coffee drinking. About half of the consumed coffee is sustainable. On the average the Dutch drink almost 150 litres of coffee per year and about three cups a day. The branded coffee shop market in the Netherlands saw a growth of 27 per cent in outlet numbers in October 2011. The market forecasts a growth of 13 per cent per annum until 2014. We see a huge advantage in the Dutch coffee market. There is a huge demand for our sustainable coffee and CoffeeTime would like to satisfy this need. However, there are a number of competitors in the market such as the Dutch market leader Douwe Egberts.[1] 2 3.2 Market targets As a company who sells coffee, the main target audience of CoffeeTime are coffee consumers and consumers of warm drinks. Considering that coffee is not suitable for children, our target group consists from young adults (age 18) to the elderly (everyone above 18). There are many under aged Dutch citizens who also drink coffee, but as coffee is actually meant for adults it will be also treated and promoted by our company as such. Coffee is a product which is drunk by all genders and classes and in all work fields. In fact, the majority of our target group drinks coffee during work. Most consumers still buy their coffee in supermarkets, therefore is it important that our coffee is available in supermarkets such as; Albert Hein, Plus, C1000 and Bas van der Heiden. 3 3.3 Environmental/ industry analysis When sustainable coffee was introduced, the average consumer had a vague notion that the quality of sustainable products was acceptable. When companies started to offer it the Dutch consumers went along with the choice of the companies, rewarding them by remaining faithful to their brand. In recent years, the sustainable coffee market share in the Netherlands has risen rapidly. Nearly half of the consumed coffee in the Netherlands is produced in a sustainable way. According to the report Zuivere Koffie (Pure Coffee) from Oxfam Novib, 45% of all coffee which is consumed by the Dutch people is sustainably produced. 40% of all coffee in the Netherlands is UTZ CERTIFIED.[2] Sustainability is important in the Dutch coffee market. Many players of the sector, roasters, supermarkets, but also NGOs and the Dutch government have been long working together on raising consumer awareness and increasing the share of sustainably produced coffee. The Royal Netherlands Coffee and Tea Association (KNVKT) decided to give a collective boost to move towards sustainability. They are doing this by consolidating their commitment in a Declaration of Intent. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, several semi-governmental platforms, certifiers, sustainability initiatives and NGOs including UTZ CERTIFIED do support this. It is expected that three quarters of the Dutch coffee supply will be sustainable by 2015. [3]
